Hearing loss myths are often based on reality \u2013 the problem is,\nit\u2019s the reality of yesterday<\/em>.\nAntiquated beliefs persist because of old perceptions and outdated technology,\nbut the one constant in life is change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Common\nHearing Loss Myths<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Myth: <\/strong>Only older\npeople have hearing loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fact: <\/strong>Only one-third of those with hearing loss are 65 or older. Hearing loss affects people of all ages<\/a> \u2013 even children and young adults.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myth: <\/strong>If I had\nhearing loss, I\u2019d know it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fact: <\/strong>Many\npeople with hearing loss are unaware of their condition for a long time.\nBecause hearing loss develops gradually, you adjust to your impairment and\nmight not even notice it until a friend or loved one says something. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myth: <\/strong>Only loud\nnoises cause hearing loss. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fact: <\/strong>Prolonged\nexposure<\/a> to any sound exceeding 85 decibels \u2013 comparable to city traffic\nin Indianapolis \u2013 can lead to gradual hearing damage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myth: <\/strong>Hearing\naids make me look older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fact: <\/strong>Hearing\naids in the past were big and bulky, but today\u2019s devices are small, sleek, and\ndiscreet. Depending on the style you choose, others might not even notice\nyou\u2019re wearing them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myth: <\/strong>Hearing\naids won\u2019t help with my hearing loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fact: <\/strong>The analog\nhearing devices of yesteryear weren\u2019t nearly as reliable or effective as\ntoday\u2019s digital hearing aids. Nine out of 10 patients with hearing loss will\nbenefit from hearing aids. For those who don\u2019t, cochlear\nimplants<\/a> may be an option. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myth: <\/strong>Hearing\naids are too complicated to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fact: <\/strong>Can you push a button? Congratulations \u2013 you can operate a hearing aid! Today\u2019s hearing devices<\/a> are almost fully automated and pre-programmed to your individual hearing preferences and lifestyle. All you have to do is put them in and turn them on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myth: <\/strong>Hearing\naids will cure my impairment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fact: <\/strong>While\nresearchers are working on a cure for hearing loss, to date the condition is\nirreversible. However, hearing aids will amplify sounds enough to enable you to\ncommunicate more effectively and enjoy a better quality of life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
